New Timken Bearing Can Offer Longer Life and Improved Performance for Wind Turbine Mainshafts
Timken® Tapered Double Inner Roller Bearing Featured at AWEA Windpower 2016

North Canton, Ohio: May 24, 2016 — The Timken Company, (NYSE: TKR; www.timken.com), a global leader in bearings, will showcase its latest bearing technology at the American Wind Energy Association’s Windpower 2016 show being held in New Orleans, La., May 24-26, in booth 2023. The Timken® Tapered Double Inner (TDI) Roller Bearing, designed to help solve mainshaft application issues in larger megawatt (MW) class wind turbines, is a drop-in replacement for the OE mainshaft spherical roller bearing. It can offer wind turbine operators longer bearing life, reduced component wear and overall better drivetrain performance to avoid costly repairs.

“We are excited to play a key role in addressing our customers’ needs in the growing wind energy market,” said Mike Connors, vice president of marketing for Timken. “The challenges in wind bring our design, product and engineering knowledge to the forefront to build the right product for our customers.”

The Timken TDI Bearing reduces sliding, skidding and smearing, creating a stiffer system with pure torque transmitted to the gearbox without additional load on the torque arms. The result is improved performance for the overall system.

“As the need for larger MW class turbines emerged, mainshaft bearings were scaled up in size and design,” said Rick Brooks, manager of wind aftermarket for Timken. “We foresaw limitations to this approach and used the opportunity to bring a better solution to the industry, developing a preloaded tapered roller bearing to solve these issues, which can extend bearing and gearbox life, and ultimately make wind turbine operators’ jobs easier.”

With the TDI bearing, wind turbine operators also should experience a number of other advantages that improve overall performance, including:

  • Using the existing OE housing for the TDI bearing when replacing a mainshaft spherical roller bearing;
  • Extending bearing life with the preloaded TDI bearing; and
  • Reducing gearbox wear due to increased system rigidity and decreased axial thrust in the gearbox load.

More details on the TDI bearing will be available from Timken at booth 2023 during Windpower 2016. A full line of Timken products for the growing wind energy market will be showcased at the booth, and can be found at www.timken.com/windenergy.
